Night Photography in Portland

April 27, 2011 By Joe

I recently got some new equipment — most importantly a new tripod (for the gearheads it’s a Manfrotto 190CXPRO4).  I’ve had an excellent tripod for some years now, but, it’s a beast and weighs entirely too much to throw on your back for a hike/bike/walk in the park.  I replaced it with an almost identical model, but instead of aluminum construction it’s carbon fiber.  This thing is so incredibly light, so light that I think the ball head (Manfrotto 488RC2) that I attach to the top probably doubles the weight.

Last night we drove down near the Broadway bridge in Portland and from about 8 to 9 PM took shots from the bridge looking north up the Willamette River towards the Freemont bridge, and then walked back along the other side and took shots looking south down river towards the Steel Bridge.  I would love to be able to spend a night on each one of Portland’s bridges (there are 10 crisscrossing the Willamette) taking pictures of the city.  Here are some shots from last night.

Springtime in Portland

April 25, 2011 By Joe

After a quick five and a half hour flight we arrived in Portland late Friday night. Jet lag usually doesn’t hit me until the next night, so I was up early on Saturday morning excited about the forecast of a sunny 70 degree day (which doesn’t happen too often this time of year here). We headed over the river to run some errands in downtown Portland and remembered that Saturday Market was open — stopped in there for a couple Rogue Ales and some great local art and shopping and then went home to grab bikes and ride to an Earth day celebration in South East Portland. It was the perfect way to spend the latter part of a hot spring day.  We got some grilled veggie dogs and veggie beer brats at the festival and then checked out my friend’s band, Outpost.  They were awesome, and if you’re in the Portland area you need to check these guys out.

Some shots from the day…

The Dream of the 90’s is Alive

April 13, 2011 By Joe

If you don’t know what this title refers to then the first thing you need to do is watch this video.  It’s quite possibly one of the best videos (and catchiest songs) that I’ve seen in the past year.

Next week I’m packing my flannel, growing my chin beard and grabbing my black rimmed glasses because, you guessed it, I’m heading to Portland!  This will be my third time visiting Rip City and I couldn’t be more excited.  Here are a few shots from the archives of my past visits…
